L'Anse Grise Community Website
L'Anse Grise is a small community located on Highway 13, approximately 1.5 miles north of the intersection of Highway 10 and 13 (Barber Spur), in Evangeline Parish, Louisiana. The population is approximately 200.
To date, it isn't known when L'Anse Grise acquired it's name or why, but ongoing research may one day provide that information. The earliest recorded use of the name L'Anse Grise, or its most popular and incorrect, translation, Gray Point, found so far, is 1928. It is found in the Vidrine Elementary School record of Nelson Johnson, who was living in L'Anse Grise when he registered at the Vidrine school in 1928 (original records and extracts in possession of Dowell Lafleur). Worth noting is the school record of Francis Aucoin, registered at the Vidrine school in 1935, whose birth place is listed as "Grey Cove," which is the proper translation of L'Anse Grise.

What is it about frogs that captivates our imagination? In a small town in the middle of Louisiana's Cajun prairie, a stone's throw from New Orleans, is a town called Rayne, where frogs have gained iconographic stature. Frogs and Rayne have a relatively long history that dates back to the 1880s, when a gourmet chef named Donat Pucheu started selling juicy, delectable bullfrogs to New Orleans restaurants. Word of Rayne's frog delicacies spread like wildfire, and soon attracted the Weill Brothers from France, who started a lucrative business exporting frogs to restaurants. For years, world-renowned restaurants like Sardi's in New York boasted of offering frog legs from Rayne, Louisiana.

Town of Lockport
Lockport, founded in 1835, traces its history to Jacques Lamotte, who in 1790 owned a large tract of land along Bayou Lafourche. Lemotte sold a portion of the tract to Messrs. Mercier and Marcantel in 1814. In 1823 William Field purchased a parcel of the land and later donated 5 arpents of it on both banks of Bayou Lafourche to Barataria and Lafourche Canal Company. As part of the transaction, the company agreed to build a canal, which would link Bayou Terrebonne to New Orleans. Allou D'Hemecourt surveyed the area in 1835. His map bears the name Longueville. Eventually, the village's name would become Lockport.
