A glittering entrance to the Mardi Gras season, the Twelfth Night celebration at the Lake Charles Civic Center draws thousands to see the grand promenade of the kings, queens, and captains of 43 krewes. The Twelfth Night tradition parallels the three kings entry at the ancient nativity twelve days after Jesus birth. Additionally, in the spirit of gift-bearing, everyone present at the southwest Louisiana celebration is given a piece of king cake, and 12 grand prizes are given to visitors who find a surprise in the cake. Over 50 door prizes will also be on hand. There is dancing following the promenade. Tickets purchased in advance are $4, or if purchased at the door theyre $5 for adults and free for children 5 and under.
1/5/2008Lake CharlesKrewe du Lac - Queens PageantsLake Charles Civic Center, Contraband Room

Saturday, January 5, Times Vary

Mardi Gras royalty and the drama of competition. Young ladies and women from five parishes vie for the cherished Miss and Ms. Mardi Gras crowns. Seven “Miss” queens are selected ranging from ages five to 23, and one “Ms.” 24 and older, based on their poise, posture, beauty, personality, and grace. The overall Miss Mardi Gras enters the state-wide Queen of Queens competition. The Misses of Mardi Gras highlight the youthful spirit and beauty of Southwest Louisiana during the carnival season. Morning-to-night pageants are held at Lake Charles Civic Center Contraband Room, approximately one month before Mardi Gras day so that the queens will reign over the season. The competition is visited by queens of state fairs and festivals and is open to the public; tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children 12 years old and under, and commemorative program books are $5.

The 2008 Parade Date this year is on Saturday, January 19, 2008 and the Krewe will be rolling and stumbling through the Marigny Triangle and the Lower French Quarter. The official parade route still needs a review by the homeland security and the city of New Orleans Pot hole Killer before we can show it. More news on the Party later. But its gonna be different than what weve done the past 8-9 years.

This years theme is the Magical Misery Tour. The King is Ronald W. Lewis of the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans. Besides bringing his own magic to that area, his main creds are:
Director, House of Dance & Feathers
President, Big 9 Social Aid & Pleasure Club

The Krewe du Vieux is a non-profit organization dedicated to the historical and traditional concept of a Mardi Gras parade as a venue for individual creative expression and satirical comment. It is unique among all Mardi Gras parades in the city because it alone carries on the old traditions of Carnival celebrations, using decorated, hand or mule-drawn floats with satirical themes, accompanied by costumed revelers dancing in the streets to the sounds of jazzy street musicians. We believe in exposing the world to the true nature of Mardi Gras - and in exposing ourselves to the world.

The Muses are the Greek goddesses who presided over the arts and sciences. They were believed to inspire artists, especially poets, philosophers and musicians. Daughters of Zeus, king of the gods, and Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory, they were born at the foot of Mount Olympus in Pieria. Their name denotes memory or a reminder, since early poets had no books to read from and thus relied on memory alone.

2/1/2008New OrleansLe Krewe d Etat6:30 pm
The August members of Le Krewe dEtat heed only edicts from their Dictator, whose identity is never revealed, and claim the streets of New Orleans annually and present a parade without peer on the Friday before Mardi Gras, or Fat Friday as it is now known. Le Krewe dEtat emerged in 1996 as the preeminent krewe and now boasts numerous floats with many riders. Its floats adhere to a traditional style of design that impart Le Krewe dEtats satirical theme, which has been voted Best of Carnival by critics. Le Krewe dEtat is also the forerunner in innovative throws, introducing the most prized catch: glow-in-the-dark beads with flashing green eyes! Le Krewe dEtat has returned to the drafting table to create even more revolutionary designs for this years parade throws that will be worth more than gold on the French Quarter exchange.

The theme for the parade is, as always, a closely guarded secret. The Dictator, however, assures his denizens that no rank or office is immune from his wit. All who preen in public are fair game for this irreverent band of hellions whose battle cry connotes the essence of the organization and, indeed, of Mardi Gras itself:

The Corps de Napoleon was established in 1980 to give Jefferson Parish an excitingly different approach to Mardi Gras. From its inception, the Corps de Napoleons goal has been to honor the French heritage of New Orleans and the surrounding parishes. Unlike other organizations who chose Greek or Roman mythological figures as their namesakes, the Corps de Napoleon instead looked to France for its roots and selected Napoleon, Frances greatest hero.

Isis was the mother of Horus and the sister and wife of Osiris in the mythology of ancient Egypt. She was honored as the goddess of the earth and the moon, a symbol of motherhood and fertility.

Isis was also worshiped in the Greek and Roman empires. She was traditionally represented as a woman wearing a cows horns with a solar disk between them.

In 1973 this all-female organization was charted in the city of Kenner, and the women held their first 7 processions there before adopting the standardized veterans Memorial Boulevard parade route, which more than a dozen Jefferson krewes share.

This full moon may happen on any date between March 21 and April 18 inclusive. If the full moon falls on a Sunday, Easter Day is the Sunday following. 2/2/2008St. MartinvilleLa Grande Boucherie des CajunsTraditionally, Cajun social life centered around the home. Neighbors came together to fashion their own entertainment. Then, as now, food was central to any gathering of friends and family.

Among Cajuns, anything can be a celebration, including the butchering of a hog. Called a Boucherie, the occasion still brings together aunts, uncles, cousins and neighbors, all of whom participate, and leave with some byproducts of the butchering. Sharing animated conversation and often some cold beer and wine, the participants produce from the freshly killed hog des tripes, which most everyone in the rest of the country call chitterlings, p’ tit sale or salt meat, andouille sausage, pork meat patties called platines, the perennial favorite boudin, which consists of rice and pork dressing stuffed in an edible casing, hog’s head cheese, marinated pork or grillades and smoked meat for seasoning which Cajuns call tasso. Also from the hog comes gratons, the original Cajun snack food. Called cracklins in other parts of the country, gratons are produced along with lard, another important byproduct of the Boucherie. The skin is scraped and the fat layer next to it rendered into lard for cooking, after which the skin and attached fat residue are fried into crisp, tasty gratons.

It is not by accident that the predominately Catholic Cajuns from St. Martinville hold their annual “La Grande Boucherie des Cajuns” right before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of the Lenten season. The community comes together for one last “bon temps.”

2/5/2008Metairie Krewe of ArgusParade Time is 10:00 am.
Argus was named after the Greek Mythology God, Argus, the all-seeing with one hundred eyes. Argus observed Jupiter cheating on his wife. Jupiter ordered Mercury to cut the head off of Argus. The Goddess Juno, seeing this, took the hundred eyes off of Argus and put them on the tail of her peacock, where they remain today. That is why the peacock is the logo of the Krewe of Argus and is the backdrop of the Co-Captains float in the parade.
