Mamou

Gayle Fontenot13th January 2010 - 4:23 PM

Can someone tell me what Mamou means? I know its a town in southern LA. I have also heard the song Big Mamou, but I don't know what Mamou means.

Keith10th December 2003 - 6:32 PM
How did the name Mamou originate? Mamou was founded when C.C. Duson in 1907 developed the town site and began selling lots. In 1911, Mamou was incorporated. The name derives from the Mamou Prairie, where the town is located, but how did the prairie get its name? One version is that Mamou is an Indian name meaning "Big Hunting Ground." After offering several other possible explanations, Revon Reed in his book Lache Pas La Patate gives this fanciful account: When the prairie was first settled by Europeans, they brought their animals, including herds of cattle. Mother cows with their calves were everywhere on the prairie. "Maa," the calves would call out. "Moo," the mother cows would respond.

Dear Ms. Fontenot, Mamou means mammouth or large. This is in reference to the Large Prairie that surrounds that town. the Prairie is known today as the Eunice Prairie. The name comes from the Indians of that are. The Indians were a branch of the attakapas tribe that inhabited this area of Louisiana. I have also heard that "Mamou" means vast expanse. Just that simple. Thank You, Gerald Fontenot.

We called my grandmother Mammon (prounounced May-Maw). As I understand it, Mammon is cajun-french for grandmother. My Mammon was a french speaking cajun from White Castle, LA.

Isn't Mamou also a medicinal plant.

Grandmother is really mamere

Gerald Fontenot15th October 2007 - 1:51 PM
Dear Mr. David X, In response to your question about Mamou being a medicinal plant; yes that is correct. There is a plant that is native to the southwest Louisiana prairie that is called the "Mamou plant. I am not a botanist so therefore I cannot tell you any information about the plant. However, this is what I do know. The Mamou plant is some sort of "Mint" variety. It grows wild and is in abundance in the northern area of the great Southwestern Louisiana Prairie. The town of Mamou is in this area. Over the years it has been used to help with coughs and colds especially for children. Adults do use it also. This is the way it is used. One is to pick 5-6 leaves (green) off of the plant. You then boil the leaves in water using a small pot of water. The water is cooled and the leaves are discarded. The left over water is then administered to the sickly one in doses of about 8 oz or so three times a day. This remedy is used until the cough breaks. Believe me it works. I myself have taken it many times as a child and young adult. A lot of people in the area of Mamou have actually planted the Mamou plant in their yards and have had ready access to its medicinal properties. Take into consideration I am 58 years old and know about this through experience. However, like everything else the use of the Mamou plant is not known to many 10 to 15 years younger than me. I hope this information has helped. I try to share my knowledge of everything Cajun. Mamou is, afterall, my second home. Best wishes, GWF.

Bon Matin Gerald

Your description of the Mamou plant is exactly what a friends mother, who lives in Mamou and has a plant in her backyard, said about it.

Her name is Chapman by marriage, Her maiden name was Fontenot. Maybe she is kin to you. Although I know there are thousands of Fontenot's over there.

Davidx

Gerald Fontenot16th October 2007 - 2:46 PM
Dear David, Glad to receive the feedback from you. I am also glad to see that you received pretty much the same response from two different individuals. In this area when two or more say it you can pretty much believe it. About your friends mother: There are some Chapmans in and around Mamou but it is not a name in large numbers. As you mentioned the Fontenot's are in large numbers. Remember this; all Fontenots are related in one way or another. All of them are from one family. Some may be 1st cousins and others 53 rd cousins but it is still one family. Glad to have helped. The best to you and yours always, Gerald W. Fontenot.

There are many stories about the name Mamou. One was the legendary Indian, Chief Mamou. It is certain that this vast Prairie was known as Mamou Prairie as far back as the 1700s and that Anglo-Americans first called it 'Mammouth Prairie' because of its immense size. And when the Frenchmen came the called it 'Mamou' for mammouth.

I happen to see your question on the board. Here's your answer:

Within this vast stretch of prairie, the town site of Mamou was laid out in 1907 by Curley C. Duson of Eunice, Louisiana. He was president of the Mamou Town site Company which opened an office on the corner of Seventh and Chestnut. Lot auctions were held weekly and lots back then sold for $50. The original village covered one square mile. On January 11, 1911 Mamou was incorporated. [4]

Cotton was the major crop for many years on the prairie. By 1915 the village boosted having four cotton gins baling thousands of bales of ginned cotton. The decline in the demand for cotton led the area farmers toward the growing of rice that is now the major crop of the area. [5]

Thank you Gerald. Now I need to do research on my husband's relatives in Louisiana. I don't know any of them and with a name like Fontenot, this will be quite a challenge.

Thank you very much for your answer. I love Louisiana history. Your name I see is Gayle also or is that from my question? I am a Fontenot by marriage, and know nothing of my husband's relatives on his dad's side, where the Fontenot name would come from of course. I am going to explore that next. Thanks again. GF

I have 3 mamou plant seeds and do not know how to plant them or where to plant them in my yard. My cousin gave them to me and said to plant them and keep them wet and it may take a long time to come up. Please tell me how to plant and care for these seeds as this is all I have. Does the plant like the full sun or shade? I appreciate any advise on this.

I know your post was some time ago, but I was wondering if you still had in your possession some mamou seeds. Also, does the plant produce a bean, red in color? My grandmother used to make Mamou Cough Syrup and Mamou tea when I was younger. She told me the red beans were mamou beans. Never could find the shrub, plant or whatever produces this bean. I would really appreciate any help you could offer.

Thank you

Abby guillory16th October 2013 - 4:17 PM
I just want to add in here about making the tea or just owning the plant in general (I didn't read all the comments so idk if someone has beaten me too it) but do not eat the red beans and if you touch them, wash yor hands. You can consume parts of the mamou plant but the red beans are highly poisonous.
