| I used to be in touch with a gentlman named Scott Lognon from Lafayette La. He had traced all of us back to a man named Louis Legnon (or one of the other spellings) who settled on the North bank of Bayou Teche in St. Mary Parish Louisiana in 1753. According to Scott, all of us are descended from that person |

| I hope you get this. For a while I was in touch with Scott Lognon from Lafayette La who said all Legnons (including the other spellings) in the US had originated with a Louis Legnon who settled on the north bank of Bayou Teche in St. Mary Parish Louisiana in 1753. He was able to give me the names of all of my grandfather's siblings. My grandfather was Paul Legnon from Charenton Louisiana |

Cacy,
I really know very little about any of the Legnon's. My father was Emmett Joseph Legnon, born in New Orleans on August 26, 1913. His father was Paul Legnon who was from Charenton, La in St. Mary Parish near what is now Morgan City, La. My father had several brothers, all of whom were childless. I have two brothers one of whom is childless and one who has a daughter and a son, my nephew Erick Legnon. Erick is in his early twenties and has no children, yet.
My grandpa, Paul Legnon, had several brothers and sisters. The only one whose name I'm sure of was an Etienne Legnon. I think they pretty much stayed in the area of St. Mary Parish, but I can't prove that. At one time I'd received an email from Scott Legnon from Lafayette who gave me a list of all of Paul's siblings, but I have no idea where it is now, post Katrina!
If I were you, I'd google Scott Legnon and try to find him. He seemed to be a fairly serious geneologist |

Scott,
I saw your reply to Sue Ellen. I've seen Lognon but not Longon. For some reason, the surname was initially spelled Leignon in the SW LA records. It was spelled Loignon on my grandmother's baptismal record. Legnon is currently the most common spelling.
Louis didn't arrive in 1753 as stated on one of the post because he wasn't born until about 1762! He most likely arrived in the early 1780s. The first child was born in 1785.
My ancestor was Frederic Louis born in 1796. Most of the Legnons in St. Mary Parish/Iberia Parish are the descendants of Joseph and Eugene. There were also slaves who were freed and given land and they remained in the St. Mary/Iberia Parish area - surname is spelled Lognon.
I haven't found a marriage record for Frederic Louis or a birth record for his son, Jean [my great-grandfather]
Marie Louise Thibeau [several spellings], wife of Louis was born in 1766 at Ft. Vincennes. I have the birth info if you would like it. |

I haven't found the marriage record of Frederic Louis (aka Louis, fils) or the baptism record of your ancestor Jean either. I do have the names (or at least some of them) of Jean's sisters (Marie Hermosa and Oliva) I believe Fredric Louis was a carpenter.
I am a decendent of Joseph and Eugene Dartez. I have found numerous spellings of the Lognon name (my dad and his brothers spelled it three different ways!).
I believe you are correct on the timing of Louis Lognon's arrival in the lower Louisiana. It looks like he made his way down from Montreal after 1774. He is one of at least three brothers to end up in what would become the United States. As far as I can tell he is the only one to settle in lower Louisiana. For this reason, I believe most if not all the Louisiana decendants come from him.

| Cacy, I checked on the Loignon's that I'm familiar with in the Robert's Cove area. One name is Henry Legnon (born around 1900) and married to Eunice Broussard. He was related to Eugene St. Aubin Lognon. You do not appear to be directly related to Henry but it is very possible that Eugene St. Aubin is your ancestor. |

| Cacy, I have additional information. I'm not sure how often you visit this website but I figured it was best to post it here in case you find it someday (and before I loose it!). I found some information that suggests a Bradley (not sure if it is your grandfather) is the son of Louis Euclide (or Ulysses Legnion). The spelling of some names were a little different but very close so you'll want to confirm through your family members if Euclide (or Ulysses)was your great grandfater. Euclide was born on Jan 8, 1908 and died 5/19/93 and was married to Gladys Guillot. If Euclide is indeed your great grandfather then we can trace your ancestory to Eugene St. Aubin Legnon. Louis Euclide Legnion was the son of Adam and Louis Sonnier Legnion. Adam Legnion was the son of Eugene St. Aubin Legnon and Angelina Boudreaux. Eugene St. Aubin Legnon (the son of Darius Legnon) was born (11/30/1849) in St. Mary Parish and eventually moved to the Acadia parish area. That appears to be how your branch of the Legnion's made it to the Robert Cove area. |

| Hi Michele, I live in Lafayette. There are alot of Lognon family members in the New Iberia area. The first Lognon in this part of Louisiana (that was Louis) settled in nearby Franklin. My ancestor was Louis Lognon as well. The ancestor line is as such: Louis son of Francois son of Jacque son of Simon. Francois was baptized in the small village of Rivarennes, France. Apparently he may have lived across the river in a place known as "Les Chezeaux". His father Jacque was born in 1668 in the village of Thenay which is not far from Rivarennes. I don't have much information on Simon. Apparently he lived in the Thenay area. |

Hi cuz, I didn't get that far. I found the guy that ran from persecution in 1763, went to Quebec, marrried a gal from there, went down to the French fort in Indiana (I believe) hopped on a boat on the Mississippi, got off the boat in St. Martinville, got on another boat on the Teche, wound up in Franklin. I grew up in Centerville, 5 miles from there. The Bert Legnon family was the only family that I knew of that remained in Franklin. I've spoken to many cousins, with different spellings, and have determined that we are all supposed to be descendants from the guy that came over from France in 1763. Was Simon his father? I'd be interested to see if there are any kin living in France today, that maybe could share some history with us. We had a guy come to our company from France. He said that he has heard the name pronounced Lwah yon. I heard a similar story of our family being onion farmers for one of the King Louis. (Don't know if that's true, but I sure would like to get down to the bottom of all that stuff, maybe even take a trip. Feel free to call. My work number is 337 837 5429. My home number is 337 229 2200. Hope you get this. Mike |

Hi everyone, as you can see we spell our name LOGNION, but the stories on here about how the families got over to Lousiana is very similiar to the ones my grandfather told me. We live in a small town called Hardin Texas, but our family is from Welsh, Jennings, and Iowa La. My grandfather is Paul Martin Lognion, his dad was Boyd Antoine "cowboy" Lognion. Im not real sure who his dad is, but I know grandpa has a brother, Jackie, who is a rancher in Welsh I believe. I would really like to find out more about my family and if any of us could possibly be related, any help would be appreciated. Thanks Laci |

Hi Ron:
I have a relative Oliva Lognon/Loignon[daughter of Frederick Lognon & Marie Louise Schexneider]who married Olivier, and lived in Patoutville, Louisiana. I haven't been able to find any additional information on Oliva or Frederick Lognon or Marie Louise Schexneider. Obviously, you have much more information on this family than I do--back to 1600's. That's great. Perhaps we are related.
I have a lot of research on other family names dating back to 1600-1700's, but I seem to have "hit a wall" on this line at the moment.

| My husband's great grandmother was Ivy Lognion born in 1899. She married a Mark Langley. Her children were born in Andrus Cove Louisiana and I believe she either lived there or somewhere around Jennings, La. They say that she and her husband were referred to as "Big momma" and "Big daddy" I have no idea why and search as I might I cannot find any other related Lognions in Louisiana. Maybe you could help? I believe they were a cajun-french speaking family and possibly she was Acadian. You are the first person I have found that even has any connection. |

HI CARLA,
YES THE LEGNION'S WERE CAJUN-FRENCH SPEAKING. IN FACT, MY GRANDFATHER ERNEST LEGNION (HIS FATHER WAS EUGENE ST. AUBIN LEGNION) DID NOT SPEAK ENGLISH AND HE DIED IN THE LATE 1950'S. HIS WIFE WAS A DOUCET. SHE ALSO COULD NOT SPEAK ENGLISH AND SHE PASSED IN THE EARLY '60'S. THAT'S WHY MANY CAJUNS IN MY ERA HAD TO AT LEAST UNDERSTAND THE LANGUAGE OR WE COULD NOT COMMUNICATE WITH OUR GRANDPARENTS. |

I have heard of our family originating from the Rayne/Churchpoint La area. some are now residing in Rayne, Lake Charles and Orangefield/Mauriceville TX. Spelling was told to me as being LOIGNION, this could be wrong. My Great Grandfateher was Arthur Eugene Longron, Married to Angel Longron, My great grandmother. Both are deceased. Interested in my family heritage, being as I willingly had a connection to South Louisiana to move here on my own. (family all in Texas) I was born and raised in the Orange/Beaumont TX area. I have been living in Lafayette for 4 years. Recently engaged to a Morein, moving to Ville Platte, La. I can ask for ages, DOB's, and any other details that my father may have. |

Hi Angel,
First, I need to update my previous post. I have new information that indicates Eugene Loignon was born 7/18/1910 (not 1908 as previously posted). He was baptised on 8/31/1911 at the catholic church in Jennings (Our Lady Help of Christians).
Your Lognon Family(or Lognion) line of ancestors is as follows:
Eugene Lognion son of Sevigne (Sidney)Lognion, Sevigne was the son of Homer and Zelma (Conner)Lognion, Homer Lognion was the son of Nicholas Treville and Zonaide (Mallet) Lognion, Nicholas Treville Lognion was the son of Eugene and Nathalie (Guidry) Lognon, Eugene Lognon was the son of Louis and Marie-Joseph (Thibault)Lognon, Louis Lognon was the son of Francois and and Marie Anne (Dube) Lognon, Francois Lognon was the son of Jacque and Marguerite (Herbaut) Lognon.
Looks like the Homer Lognion family was from around the Roanoke/Thornwell area. The Lognon family in Louisiana initially lived in the Franklin, Louisiana area. Your ancestor, Treville, was orphaned and lived with another family in Vermilion Parish. He eventually moved further west. By the way, Treville was a Civil War Veteran.
The Treville and Homer Lognion families were HUGE. Too many to list here.
The Lognon name is spelled numerous ways. It probably wasn't purposefully changed by your ancestor but more likely that the person recording the baptism/birth/marriage spelled it as they thought it should be spelled.

The Sidney Lognion family had nine children.
I have found an Angel (listed as Angele) Stutes that was born on April 23, 1911 in Scott, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Alcide and Cecilia (Roy) Stutes. I haven't researched this family so I don't have alot of information on them.
Having a display at your wedding is a great idea. I have some software that can put together a family tree but it may not have the greatest graphics for displaying. I can be contacted directly at Scottl4444 at bellsouth dot net. Sorry for spelling out my email address, just trying to avoid getting spam.

Angel, I haven't found Eugene and Angel Longron's marriage record but I'm pretty sure it would be in Orange County, Texas. Probably between 1928 - 1930. They were married and living in Orange county, tx in the spring of 1930. I'll email you with more details. |

My great-grandmother was Josephine Legnon. She was born 14 Dec 1892 and died on 15 Aug 1970 in Berwick LA. Has anyone got her listed in their family tree? This line has stumped me forever! She married Jean Pierre Derise and they had 15 children of whom, my grandmother, Lucille, was the eldest girl. Any help at all would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Leslie |

| Leslie, Josephine and Jean Pieere Derise were married 7/17/1907. I also have Josephine as the daughter of Jean Legnon and Mary Ann Smith. There is an issue with the line though. In my records, Josephine is not listed with Jean Legnon Family in the 1900 Census. Jean Legnon was the son of Fredrick Legnon (aka Louis, Jr). Fredrick Louis Legnon was the son of Louis Legnon and Marie Joseph Thibault. |

Laci, I saw your post and thought I would reply. My mother is a Lognion. Jackie is a cousin and he does live in Welsh and is a cattleman. He also has sisters that live near Lacassine. I am 6th generation Lognion living on the old Lognion place. I have seveal old family photos, and have one of you great grandfather, Antoine Lognion "Boy", not Boyd who grew up here. The Lognions were cattlemen and farmers who came to Bayou Chene, southeast of Welsh, from their plantations in St. Mary Parish around the 1830's. I visited with Jackie recently and I plan to give him copies of some of the old photos. My great geat grandfather, Nicolas Treville Lognion and his fahter-in-law (my great-grat-great grandfather) Antoine Malet both from St. Mary Parish were the first settlers to this area. Since I grew up on the old place, I have many stories the old Lognions told me and have several old photos that go as far back as great great great grandparents. We are definately cousins and if you would like to make contact with any of us, let me know. Scott |

Hi Yves, I saw your post to Ron and wanted to also welcome you to the site and share some info with you.
I am aware of a Pierre Alognon or Lognon that was in Canada prior to my ancestor coming to North America. As far as I know, our ancestor, Francois Lognon, was not related (at least not very closely) with the Pierre Lognon. Francois went to Canada in 1739. Although he arrived in Quebec City, he eventually made his way to Montreal where he married and raised his children. I'd be glad to share more info with you (or anyone else interested in Lognon Family history), please feel free to contact me at ScottL4444 "at" bellsouth "dot" com. |

Scott,
I am glad to here from you. Eugene Lognion was my Great great great grandfather. He had 2 sons, Nicolas Treville who was my great-great grandfather and St. Aubin Lognion. Grandpa Treville left St. Mary after his father Eugene died. Eugne died at the age of 40. He settled here at Bayou Chene and owned several sections of land here. St. Aubin remained in St. Mary and was a merchant (he owned a store near Charenton at Cypremort). He served in the Confederate cavalry. He is buried at Charenton cemetery, but the grave is apparently unmarked today. I visited with the priest at the Charenton Catholic church several years ago and found his original burial records but could not find the grave. Grandpa Treville served in the Confederate Infantry and is buried at Andrus Cove Cemetery near here. I have a copy of Eugene's succession tha lists the land in St. Mary, slaves, livestock, tools, furniture, etc. The spelling of the name Lognion is proper. L'ognion - refers to the family in France that grew onions. The Legnon's, Lagneaux, and other Americanized spellings are all the same family. The Lognions as well as the Malets are not Acadians, but were Quebecois and my grandparents always reminded me of that.
I have lots of old photos, documents, and family history stories from the Lognions.
We should get together sometime.

| I have been to the graveyard in Charenton and had the same luck (my gg-great and g-great grandparents are buried there). Indeed, the Lognon's have come to Louisiana from France via Canada, Montreal to be exact. I've been researching the Lognon family for 30 years have have accumulated some good info over time. Here is some more info from my Dad...
Our guy that came from France is Jacques Loignon Married In Montreal Canada to Marquerite Herbaut. They had one recorded Son Francois Loignon who married Marie Dube in June 1743. They had 6 children. Only one came to La. and he was Fredric Louis Loignon, he Married in St Martinville La. to Marie Josephe Thibeaut which the first Joseph middle name came from. they had 9 kids which Joseph Sr. is our Grandfather he fought in the Battle of New Orleans as a Sargent. His Younger brother Louis was with him as a private. there is no record of Louis after that and the records of the dead were lost to a flood so i belive he was killed in the battle but I really dont know. Joseph Jr. was the fourth child born of Joesph Sr .his son Joseph Jr. married Amelie Hebert and lived in Charenton and they are buried there. Joseph Jr's son is Labranche who had 8 kids of which 3 did not live long.
I belive you know the rest Gaston and Bert which was Daddys birth name and he changed it to Burke after he was 18. |

The Joseph's brother Louis is indeed a hard one to trace. I have found some records of him living afer 1812 so I don't think he died during the War of 1812. I believe he may have been a carpenter. He was living in St. Mary Parish as late as 1850.

Hi Adrianne, I haven't seen that spelling before. It is possible that Legnen is the name as Lognon. Legnon is how the name Lognon is spelled by many family members in Louisiana. Many use the english pronunciation (Leg - non) and some, such as my family, use the french pronunciation (Lon - yon).
Our ancestor from France, Francois Lognon (also spelled Longnon), came from an area near Rivarennes, France. He came to North America in 1739, a good bit before your grandfather.
By the way, according to the 1930 census, your grandfather immigrated in 1900. However, I didn't see any other Legnen families in the 1900 to 1920 census.
